Situated atop Lookout Mountain near Trenton, Georgia, lies a breathtaking gorge known as Cloudland Canyon. Encompassing over 3,400 acres, Cloudland Canyon State Park preserves a spectacular landscape of sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, thick forests, and elevation changes of 1,000 feet.

About

The park’s centerpiece is the imposing Sitton Gulch ravine, carved out over eons by Sitton Gulch Creek and its tributaries like Daniel Creek. As you gaze down into Cloudland Canyon’s depths, it’s hard to imagine this area was once an ancient ocean floor! Tectonic forces thrust this land upwards over 200 million years ago. Gradually, the waters retreated, and rivers ate away at the sandstone and limestone to form the sheer canyon walls seen today.

Cloudland Canyon State Park originated in the late 1930s as a New Deal project during the Great Depression. Using Civilian Conservation Corps labor, the state of Georgia slowly acquired defunct farmland acreage to establish a park. Facilities expanded over time to the current range of rental cottages, campgrounds, trails, and recreation options.

Of course, hiking is a main draw. The popular Waterfalls Trail switchbacks 600 steps down into the canyon, passing the 60-foot Cherokee Falls and 90-foot Hemlock Falls fed by Daniel Creek. More adventurous trekkers can tackle the 9-mile Bear Creek Trail to explore forested hollows. Miles of paths crisscross the plateau, from moderate loops to backcountry backpacker access.

Whether pitching a tent, renting a cottage, picnicking, disc golfing, or simply soaking in the vistas, Cloudland Canyon State Park promises an unforgettable North Georgia mountain escape for all ages.
