The stately Rockcliffe Mansion stands atop a rocky cliff overlooking the Mississippi River in Hannibal, Missouri. Built-in 1898 as the private residence of wealthy lumber baron John J. Cruikshank Jr., this ornate stone mansion exemplifies the opulence and grandeur of turn-of-the-century architecture.

Rockcliffe’s imposing exterior features grand Corinthian columns, expansive porches, and elaborate stonework. Inside, the 13,500-square-foot interior is a feast for the senses. Exotic woods, imported marble, stained glass, and gilded architectural details adorn the formal parlors and reception rooms. Even famed Missouri writer Mark Twain once captivated guests with a speech from Rockcliffe’s dramatic double staircase.

Rockcliffe remains incredibly well-preserved, filled with original Cruikshank family furnishings and artifacts. On a tour, you can admire the music room’s Tiffany glass fixtures or run your hand along the home’s rare lemonwood and olivewood accents. With much of the decor personally commissioned by the Cruikshanks during travels abroad, each room offers a window into the family’s privileged lifestyle.

After sitting vacant for over 40 years, Rockcliffe was purchased in 1967 and underwent meticulous restoration. Today, visitors can experience this Gilded Age mansion just as the Cruikshanks did during Hannibal’s prosperous riverboat era. From the grand entry hall to the stately bedrooms, stepping inside Rockcliffe transports you back in time.

History buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone looking into Missouri’s past should visit the historic Rockcliffe Mansion. In addition to daily tours, Rockcliffe offers the unique opportunity to spend the night on the property, immersing yourself in the ambiance of this century-old estate.
