Monument Rocks have been an iconic landmark for millions of years in the heart of Kansas. These rocks are filled with a variety of fossils and resemble a chalky substance. Many visitors take the journey each year to experience these unique formations.

Commonly referred to as “Chalk Pyramids” by the locals, Monument Rocks formed millions of years ago when the section of Kansas was once under the ocean. The carbonate deposits left behind from this time led to the creation of the chalk monuments that stand today.

These towers stand up to 70′ in height in some places and have been a notable landmark along trails for both Native Americans and settlers alike. In fact, this area was the first designated National Natural Landmark by the United States Department of Interior.

Monument Rocks are located about 30 miles north of Scott City, Kansas in Gove County.
