This beautiful historic home is the last remaining private residence of President James Polk. He served as the 11th President of the United States. The home has been immortalized as a museum documenting the life and times of President Polk.

Samuel Polk built this home for his family in 1816 and it soon became the family home for his wife and children. One of his children grew up to be the 11th President of the United States, James K. Polk.

James Polk lived here until 1824 when he decided to pursue a career in law. He attended school and practiced in Nashville just a short distance north. On occasion he would return home to this place to visit with his family. After becoming a lawyer, Polk moved back to Columbia full time when he opened his own practice. He lived down the street with his wife, Sarah Childress. Their home burned down that was a few blocks away over a hundred years ago.

After James Polk’s father passed away in 1827, he took ownership of the residence. His mother continued to live in the home for the rest of her life. The last Polk descendent to live in the home moved out in 1871. It changed owners many times until finally becoming under ownership by the State of Tennessee and later a museum.
