Just over 61 square feet in size, the Ochopee Post Office boasts the title of being the Smallest Post Office in the United States. However, the Ochopee Post Office wasn’t always this small, and the story of how it came dates back to 1953. Today, the post office still operates with the full functionality of a typical post office, with the exception of its size.

History

Located in the rural community of Ochopee, Florida, near the northern border of the Everglades, once stood the Gaunt Company Store that housed the post office for the nearby area. When a tragic fire destroyed the store and the post office, it was immediately determined that a new building would be needed immediately, as despite not having a building, mail does not stop.

A shed used for irrigation pipe for a nearby tomato farm was selected as the next post office. In 1953, this small post office opened for use out of the old remodeled shed. To this day, it still services areas in three surrounding counties, including collecting and distributing mail.
