About

Opened by Georgia Museums, Inc in December 2021, the Savoy Automobile Museum has already gained quite some attention for its state-of-the-art facility and amazing rotating collections. The museum is commonly referred to as “The Savoy”. However, the story behind how the museum got its name is another interesting tidbit of history.

As the land was being cleared to commence construction on the new attraction, an abandoned automobile was found amongst the brush. After further inspection, the car was found to be a 1954 Plymouth Savoy. The car was half-buried and even had a tree growing up in its trunk area. The unique story caught on and so the museum name was penned. Today, the weathered car has been placed near the museum building next to the parking area for visitors to see, and of course, a new tree was planted in the trunk area!

Things to Do

Exhibits

The Savoy Automobile Museum offers rotating exhibits across the five gallery areas in the museum. One of the galleries, the Savoy Collection, does not change as it is a permanent display. The Savoy Collection features beautifully kept automobiles dating back to the early 20th-century.

The other four galleries within the museum change every couple of months. There is an average of 12 different exhibits that come onto display each year. Not all of the galleries are automobiles in particular as some of the displays include drag cars, automotive artwork, boats, model cars and more!

While the museum does have a “no touch” policy, it does allow guest to take photos of the cars and look underneath the vehicles. On select weekends, certain cars selected from different galleries will have their hoods up. This allows visitors to see the what lies beneath the hood of these showpieces. Check the events calendar for Hoods Up! Weekends.

On Wednesday’s and Thursday’s at 11:00 am, the museum offers guided tours led by a knowledgeable docent. The tours are free with museum admission but are limited to only the first 15 people. Guided tours last about 60 minutes and give an the opportunity to learn more about what is on display in the galleries.
