About

Long before settlers moved into the region, Native Americans were known to use some of Rock City’s present day lookout points. During the Civil War, records documented that visitors believed that they could “See 7 States” from the summit of Rock City.

In the 1920s, Garnet and Frieda Carter purchased the land to create a neighborhood atop Lookout Mountain. Instead, they ended up creating a miniature golf course, which was known to be the first of its kind that debuted a fairytale theme.

The 700 acres that sat atop Lookout Mountain became Frieda’s creative space. She planned out a set of trails that would wind through the rocks, over creeks and into caves leading to the famous “Lovers Leap”.

Around the 1930s, the attraction took off. Clark Byers traveled from Florida to Michigan painting “See Rock City” on barns, bulletins and bird houses to promote the attraction on Lookout Mountain. It worked. Today, “See Rock City” is still an iconic slogan and loved by locals and visitors alike.

The park now features many fun attractions for guests. These include nearly a 3/4 of a mile walking trail that winds through the park, a 180 foot suspension bridge, a waterfall with a 90′ drop and a fairyland cave complete with depictions of popular fairytales. Also, don’t forget to see seven states from the lookout!
