Just outside Hardin, Montana, lies the sprawling 35-acre grounds of the Big Horn County Historical Museum. Founded in 1979, this museum brings the area’s rich history to life through 24 preserved historic buildings filled with fascinating exhibits.

Wandering the grounds transports visitors back to Montana’s frontier past. Walk through the original LaForge cabin smelling of hand-cut logs. Experience a traditional Crow Nation tepee, referred to by tribes as a “second mother.” Take a seat in a century-old doctor’s office that served the community for over 70 years.

Each building brims with photographs, artifacts, and replicas that provide an immersive glimpse into bygone eras. The museum also includes extensive exhibits covering agricultural history with antique tractors and farming implements. Vintage automobiles fill an on-site garage.

Inside the main museum, galleries vividly profile the culture of Plains Native Americans, cowboy life, and the lore of Fort Custer constructed during the Indian Wars. The museum houses the preserved studio, cabins, and plant garden of acclaimed Western author Will James.
