Baseball fans and movie buffs are drawn to Dyersville, Iowa’s iconic Field of Dreams movie site. Situated on farmland outside town, this magical baseball diamond for the 1989 film starring Kevin Costner sprang to life. Over 30 years later, the field from the movie remains a beloved tourist destination.
The lore of Field of Dreams revolves around farmer Ray Kinsella, played by Costner, who hears a voice saying, “If you build it, he will come.” He interprets this as a sign to build a baseball field on his corn farm, which ultimately attracts the ghosts of famous ballplayers. The movie’s beautiful baseball field was specially constructed across two farm properties for optimal sunset shots.
After filming wrapped, the field was left behind. The Lansing family kept their portion as a tourist spot, while the Ameskamp family eventually restored their section. The two sides operated separate attractions for years, often at odds over commercialization. Finally, in 2007, the Ameskamp family sold their land to the Lansings, unifying the site under one owner for the first time.
In recent years, Field of Dreams has hosted special events like celebrity ballgames and movie screenings to celebrate its status as a cinematic landmark. The location draws over 100,000 visitors annually. Fans can walk on the grass, grab souvenirs, and soak up the magic of this legendary place.
The property’s new owners have expanded offerings, allowing overnight rentals in the iconic farmhouse. They also have big plans to build a youth baseball complex nearby. But the heart will remain that heavenly Field of Dreams where players like Shoeless Joe can live forever.
