David Davis was a friend and mentor to President Abraham Lincoln. In fact, after Lincoln took office he appointed Davis to the U.S. Supreme Court where he served throughout most of the Civil War and beyond during the years of 1862-1877.

Davis’ wife Sarah did not want to live in Washington D.C. while her husband served on the Supreme Court so in 1870, David began the construction of this elaborate Bloomington home. It was his idea for Sarah to have a beautiful home to live in while he was away working.

When the mansion was completed in 1872, it was one of the most prominent homes in Bloomington. Boasting Gilded Age pieces and trim work, the 36-room mansion towered three stories. The exterior of the residence was composed of a sturdy yellow brick. The home was named Clover Lawn.

After serving in the U.S. Supreme Court, Davis later pursued a career as a U.S. Senator in which he represented the state of Illinois. This term once again kept him in Washington D.C. frequently. Finally, Davis retired in 1883 and lived in the home until his death in 1886.

Clover Lawn remained in the Davis family for nearly 100 years. In 1960, the mansion was granted to the state of Illinois for preservation.
