Rising dramatically above the plains of western Nebraska, the iconic bluffs of Scotts Bluff National Monument beckoned pioneers traveling westward in the 19th century. Today, this National Park Service site allows visitors to explore the landmark’s rugged cliffs and follow in the footsteps of history.

Scotts Bluff’s towering 800-foot bluffs overlooking the North Platte River was a vital navigation marker for 250,000 emigrants journeying west on the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails. Lookouts like Eagle Rock and Crown Rock provided breathtaking vistas for weary pioneers. Traces of the deep wagon ruts carved into the landscape can still be seen.

At the base of the bluffs, the Oregon Trail Museum and Visitor Center details the arduous cross-country journeys faced by settlers. Exhibits feature artwork, pioneer artifacts, and fossils found in the area. From there, trails wind through Mitchell Pass and ascend to the bluffs’ summit, rewarding hikers with stunning panoramas.

Whether gazing up at the weathered bluffs from below or taking in the boundless plains above, Scotts Bluff evokes the hope and perseverance that drove 19th-century expansion west. Let this monument’s timeless beauty and rich history spur your spirit of adventure.
