Nestled down winding country roads following the Cane River, the St. Augustine Catholic Church is one of the most historic houses of worship in the state of Louisiana. Founded by freed members of the local Black Creole community, it has stood for nearly two centuries as a symbolic meeting house and cultural center. It also happens to be a site used in the filming of the popular 1989 film, Steel Magnolias.

Augustin Metoyer was a local Creole plantation owner who had founded Melrose Plantation which lies just across the river from the church site. After the church opened in 1829, it served as an important mission and house of worship for locals. The Metoyers served as the designers and leading founders of the church and always occupied the first pews.

During the Red River Campaign of the Civil War in 1864, the original St. Augustine Catholic Church was burned by passing Union soldiers. The present church building was built in 1917.

The inside of the church depicts paintings of the Metoyer family and even the original church bell. The congregation still hosts regular worship services.

The church was also made famous in the popular 1989 film, Steel Magnolias. The film starred Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Sally Field and Shirley MacLaine. The St. Augustine Catholic Church was the film site of the wedding of Julia Roberts’ character, Shelby.

St. Augustine Catholic Church is located at 2262 LA-484 in Natchez, Louisiana. As this is an operating church and nearby cemetery, there are no tours of the church. However, there is a regular Mass schedule.
