History

Built in 1851, the Alabama State Capitol has withstood the trials of time to display the history of the Yellowhammer State. After having several other state capitols within Alabama, Montgomery was delivered the official title in 1846. Soon after, the need for a grand building to house the government was declared.

In early 1861, Alabama seceded from the Union during the Civil War. During that time for a couple of months, Montgomery was granted the title of Capital of the Confederacy. Jefferson Davis was elected President of the Confederacy and lived at the First White House which still stands across the street. After being elected, Davis gave his inauguration speech on the steps of the Alabama capitol, the spot he stood during that speech is marked with a star.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Montgomery was a popular location of the Civil Rights movement. The movement hosted several marches. The third Selma to Montgomery March in 1964, ended on the steps of the Alabama capitol. It was this final march and surrounding protests that led to the enactment of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Today, the building is noted for its key role in many historical events. It is open for tours and welcomes visitors to explore its chambers, beautiful woodwork, spiral staircase of the of course, the awesome rotunda.
